Many parents fall into fitness disrepair after their first child and never get back on track. Good news: Kids don’t have to be a hindrance to fitness. Indeed, they can be part of the fun! According to Care.com, “Regular physical activity helps children build healthy bodies and prevent chronic disease”, so getting fit together is good for the whole family. Here are 3 fun ways to get fit with your kid:
Walk together as much as possible. Whether your child is in the Bjorn or stroller, or walking beside you, the earlier you get them in the groove of walking, the better. Stroll downtown instead of taking that 2-minute drive (and looking for parking for 10 minutes). Take light hikes on weekends. If you live in a city, walk instead of taking the bus or subway. You’ll enjoy the physical activity and the time it gives you to chat.
2. Family Tournament
Find an activity that you all like doing– whether it’s biking, hiking or badminton– and make a habit of doing it regularly. To keep everyone engaged, get a healthy competition going, i.e., whoever sees the most birds on the hike or whoever wins the match, is The Champ until next time. Perhaps The Champ gets to skip chores or choose the next movie you watch as a family.
3. You Know the Drill
As your kids get older, one or more of them will probably express an interest in sports. Ask their coach to teach you drills that you and your child can practice together. If they’re not into the popular sports in town, help them find something that intrigues them and go from there. It may take some experimenting, so get ready to dance, shoot arrows and learn a little Tae Kwon Do until they find their sweetspot.
Now that you’re getting back on track, there may be times when you want to exercise alone. Don’t use your kids as an excuse. If your 30 minutes a day becomes part of the normal swing of things, they will accept it. Set them up with an activity and ask not to be disturbed. Hope you enjoyed these 3 fun ways to get fit with your kid.
And don’t forget your Tickle Water, the yummiest way to stay hydrated!
