If your children aren’t back in school yet, you’re probably wondering what to do with them during the days that remain. Most camps have closed their cheerful doors, leaving you out in the blazing sun with a gaggle of bored small people. Here are five daytime fun ways for you or the babysitter to keep the kids from driving you, each other and probably the cat, crazy.
1. Hit the Mall
It’s likely you still have some back to school shopping to do, but the thought of bringing your children brings beads of sweat to your brow. Believe it or not, letting them tag along can present an educational opportunity about budgeting and making smart shopping decisions, while giving them a chance to choose things that they like (fewer returns later, yay!). Plus, the mall is well air conditioned and there’s food.
2. Day Trip
Reach out to local friends or post on your town listserve for day-trip suggestions. There are surely lakes, hikes or parks that you never knew about within a drivable distance. Get your children involved and target a couple places everyone wants to check out. Pack a picnic lunch with some cold Tickle Water and hit the road.
3. Jumping, Climbing, Splashing
You’ve probably dropped your children off for a weekend birthday party at the local splash park, indoor rock climbing wall or trampoline spot. These places are also open on weekdays and they’re a great way to occupy a few hours. Ask your children which one they really liked and make an afternoon of it.
4. A Bevvy of Books
If, despite your best efforts, your children haven’t cracked a book all summer, there’s still a little time to clean that up. Bring them to the local library or kid-friendly bookstore and challenge them to find several books they are interested in reading. You’ll be surprised by how much everyone enjoys themselves. And hey, you may find a good read for those final beach days!
5. The Big Screen
Going to the movies can be expensive, but check your local theatre for any free or discounted flicks they’re showing on weekdays. These movies are typically not current releases but you might find a beloved kids’ movie on tap. Some theatres also offer discounts on new releases on select days.
