By Heather, Jayger’s Mom
When the idea for Tickle Water first popped into my head over a year ago, it seemed like just that—an idea…something fun to think about, but also very daunting to actually make it happen. But that initial excitement never went away. My husband Adam encouraged me to do it. Friends did the same. My son Jayger seemed to like the idea, too! So, with all that support, I jumped right in. All along the way, I’ve really loved the journey (and it has been a journey!)…getting a business up and running in New York, learning to navigate the food and beverage industry, and getting to meet and hear from many of you.
But even with all the excitement of starting a new project, I could never have imagined some of the challenges that come up on a daily basis. Launching a new company can be an unpredictable process. There’s one thing I’ve learned: with so many variables—from small, day-to-day things at the office to the larger scale issues involved with producing and distributing a new beverage brand—things will often go off course.
So, when I see things like this recent article, in Business Insider, about how the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture had to put strict limits on the amount of sugar Americans should eat and drink, it reminds me that Tickle Water is on the right track! The warnings that come in these reports are so alarming. They make it perfectly clear that excessive sugar can lead to serious medical problems—obesity, diabetes, and all sorts of chronic illnesses. It reminds me how important it is to drink water (instead of sugary drinks), and to have the kinds of alternatives to juice and soda that kids will want to choose. So, as other beverage companies scramble to trim off their sugar levels to squeeze into new guidelines, Tickle Water has nothing to worry about, since it’s completely sugar-free.
But this is not just about a business being on the right track. More importantly—much more importantly—reports like these are reminders that kids who drink lots of water are starting off on the right track to a healthier life. Even from the very beginning of this journey, Tickle Water has never been about business alone. It has so much to do with my own personal experience as a new mom, trying to make healthy choices for my family, and getting to know tips from other parents about healthy eating and drinking. I’d love to hear from you about your strategies for steering kids away from sugar. Send me a note and let me know how you keep your kids on a healthy track.
